Mobile phones are just flat out expensive. Cell providers always have a phone on sale; albeit a cheap one that will likely break in a few months. But purchasing the phone isn't the end of the user's expenses. Most cell phone providers will offer unlimited everything for a flat rate of $100 a month. If you do the math, that's $1200 per year for something no bigger than your hand. You can put a down payment on a car with that type of money. Landline phones are not as convenient, but they cost way less than that.
