How To Spot A Fake Rolex

1.Rolex & Water

Any Rolex can handle being dipped into a cup of water for a couple of minutes without any problem. Do this and then see if any water has got into the face of the dial because this should not happen with the real thing. The fake is incapable of being made to the same high quality, so the water can then damage the watch whereas the real thing is not going to be concerned about just a bit of water.

2.Google It

Take the model number and Google it to then see what it says regarding its characteristics. There may also be a guide as to what to look out for with a fake for that particular model. Enlarge the picture, follow the instructions, and compare it to your own watch and see if all of the different things actually do match up.

3.Dealers

If you have concerns, then take it to an actual Rolex dealer who will open it up and check it out for you. This is often the best way to work out if it is a fake or not. They can look into the actual mechanics of the watch and tell you if what you have is genuine or not. However, this can usually only be done after buying, so be careful.

4.The sound

Listen to the watch because it should not be ticking as the second hand moves. This noise is caused by it jerking, but it should be nice and smooth and also be silent with the real thing. A real Rolex is simply incapable of making a noise unless there is an issue with the watch, but then that should not happen when you are buying a brand new one.

5.Magnifying

On the date section in a classic Rolex, the glass will actually magnify the date 2X, but on a fake they will just use plain glass and that magnification will not happen. They do this as it is often too complicated for them to build the magnifier into the fake, so they use normal glass to try to replicate it.

6.The source

Think about the source where you have bought it from and whether or not it is a real Rolex dealer. This can often guide you away from a fake immediately. If it sounds too good to be true, then in most instances it actually is too good to be true, so be wise in order to avoid being caught out.

7.The bracelet

If the bracelet is taken off you will then see the case and model number engraved at both 6 and 12 and this is often something missing in a fake. It is these tiny details that can really make the difference between the genuine article and a fake, so do look out for it before buying.

8.Swiss Made

The Swiss Made part in the real thing is made up of hundreds of dots in the crystal set at different heights whereas with the fake they will laser etch it into the crystal instead. Once again they do this to help keep the costs down as low as possible as the real way of doing it is very expensive.

9.The movement

The movement on a fake one is always going to be more jerky than it is on the real thing due to the way in which the real movement is made. A real Rolex will involve eight individual movements per second and this helps it to go a lot more smoothly than it otherwise would be and this level of mechanical engineering is something the fake fails to match.

10.The dial

The printing on the dial of a fake is often slightly fuzzy or it does not have absolutely perfect edges. This does not happen with the real one. This is an area where Rolex really does go for perfection, so if you look at a fake and the real deal it can often be quite obvious as to which one is which.

11.Central date window

The date window in a real one will be absolutely central over the number whereas with a fake it is often slightly to one side. This is a small detail that the fakers tend to struggle to get right, so have a good look at how it lines up.

12.The face

The face of a real Rolex is made with sapphire crystal and that can only be scratched with a diamond, so if it can be scratched, then it is not the real thing. They use a cheaper material to bring the price down, so have a good look in order to determine if you have the genuine article.
