#8 Schooner Gulch - Mendocino, California
This beach has become known as Bowling Ball Beach because of the large boulders in the shape of balls, covering the sand. Uniform in shape and size, they are perfectly spaced. Called concretions by geologists, these rocks are left behind by the erosion of the Cenzoic mudstone that surrounded them. As the Pacific pounded the shores, the diminishing sand left behind these perfectly formed boulders.
