Sofia isn't just the name of a Golden Girls character. The region is the economic center of Bulgaria. It has been the country's capital since 1879 and is the fifth largest city in the European Union. Due to the city's decline in apartment prices in 2009 by 26%, Sofia is one of the cheapest places in the world to live.
