1.Remove that tattoo

Over $200,000 was once spent on creating a tattoo removal program in Mission Hills, California. The first thing you wonder is why on earth they felt the need to do that and secondly why spend so much money? There are a number of things out there that can help people with this, so why spend more tax money on it?

2.Love online

A researcher was given $239,100 to look at how Americans are using the Internet to find love. OK so there is some sense in looking into it, but over $200,000?? That could have been done for about $50 and only take 20 minutes to work it out.

3.Politicians

An award of $216,000 was given to a group of researchers with the sole purpose of working out how sitting on the fence affects the popularity of a politician. Surely that is the same as giving a group of researcher money to find out why the sea is blue because we already know the answer to this one?

4.Video Game

A professor who was based at Dartmouth University was given a total of $137,530 to produce a video game that was based on the recession. The game was to be called Layoff and you do wonder as to how much thought they put into this because a video game will not help people in a recession, but having a job and being able to afford things will make a difference.

5.penis washing

Yep you read that right. The health department once gave $800,000 to a program that basically wanted to do some research into penis washing in South Africa. They wanted to see the impact it made when there was a program promoting it, but how did they even know about it and why choose South Africa?

6.A salmon painting

A few years ago Alaska Airlines were actually given $500,000 just to paint a salmon on the side of one of their planes. How much does it really cost to get this painted? You know that it would have been nowhere near that price, but for some reason they decided to give them a lot of money. That is one expensive salmon.

7.Risky when drunk

Some researchers were once given $400,000 just to look at why gay men in Argentina indulge in some risky sexual behavior when they are drunk. This is surely just a joke and some researcher trying to come up with the craziest thing that they could apply for and you know they would have been shocked when the government said yes.

8.Not farming

Farmers in the US are given a total of $2 billion a year simply not to farm parts of their land. That is shocking in two ways because first it is a lot of money and secondly why pay people not to farm their land when there is a shortage of food in parts of the world?

9.Chinese pr0stitutes

This has to be one of the strangest things ever. The US government once spent $2.6 million just on teaching Chinese pr0stitutes to drink more responsibly. What on earth is going on when that amount of money is being spent on this kind of thing? You do have to question the sanity of the person responsible for the budget.

10.T-shirts

$650,000 was one given to the University of California and all that they had to do was to digitize t-shirts, photographs, and tickets that belonged to the Grateful dead. The first thing you think about here is how much money it was and the second thing is wondering why on earth you would want to do that in the first place?

11.Pakistani farmers

At one point, although thankfully it has stopped, the government spent $30 million to help farmers in Pakistan to grow more mangoes. You would at least hope that they then went ahead and sold the mangoes back to the US so at least we got something out of it at the end.

12.Indonesian degrees

Yes believe it or not, but there is a government program that plans on spending up to $20 million on helping students from Indonesia to get Masters degrees. It does seem to be a very strange thing to focus on and you do wonder how else that money could have been spent.
