1.Sweet Red Wine

If you like sweet wine, this is the wine for you. Sweet red wine is made when grape juices is added to wine, overwhelming the yeast and producing a sweet wine. Port wines are made in barrels, aging many years, while Sherry is made by adding brandy, but only after fermentation. It has an aging process as well.

2.Nebbiolo

Another great Italian wine is Nebbiolo. This grape is used in Barbaresco, Barolo, and Gattinara wines, which are flavorful with a fruity and spicy aroma. High in tannins and high in alcohol, they are full bodied and have a complex flavor. These wines require a lot of aging, but some wine makers in Italy and California have made a lower tannin wine.

3.Grenache/Garnacha

The grenache grape is popular in France and in Spain. Crossing the sea to California and down to Australia, this wine is graining a popularity around the country. Grenache wines, such as Cotes du Rhone, Rioja, and Cheteauneuf du Pape, are all low in tannins and high in alcohol content.

4.Sangiovese

Sangiovese is Italy's most popular wine. Grown in Tuscany, this wine has a fruity flavor with some tannin. With wines such as Vino Nobile de Montepulciano, and Brunello di Monalcino, this wine is the top wine in Italy and for good reason. Aged for a richer, more potent flavor, the Italians know their wine.

5.Merlot

If you like fruity wines, you'll love Merlot. With undertones of black currant, this wine has a dark, rich color and a high alcohol content. A rich, full bodied wine, the merlot grape is the most planted in Bordeaux. A popular wine in Italy, Chile and California, its taste draws wine drinkers from all over the world.

6.Syrah/Shiraz

Syrah grapes used in Shiraz are very popular, creating a dark and full bodied wine. The robust flavor can be fruity or spicy, and makes for a great dinner drink, or after dinner drink. Popular in Australia, this wine has made it's way around the world, being known for its rich taste.

7.Pinot Noir

Lighter in color than Merlot or Cabernet, Pinot Noir is light on tannins with a great aroma. This fruity wine is grown best in Oregon and California's Napa Valley. With a summery fruity undertone, this wine is great for warm weather climates, summer and spring seasons, and warm fall weather..

8.Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon uses one of the easiest grapes to grow. Grown in a warm climate, such as California, Italy, Chile, South Africa and Spain, most dry red wines uses these grapes. With a medium to full bodied taste, this red wine is high in tannins, coming from the stem, seeds and skin.

9.Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc has a spicy aroma and taste, ranging from tobacco to fruit and even flowers. Popular in Bordeaux as well as in California, this wine tastes different depending on where it comes from. A truly flavorful red wine blend with an outstanding flavor. Great for those who love a spicy undertone.

10.Malbec

Used in Argentina and Chilean wines, Malbec is deep, red in color and has a berry flavor. With high tannins, this wine was once a blending grape in Bordeaux wines The grape itself thrives in South America, where there is a longer growing season to give the fruit it's rich taste.

11.Barbera

An Italian, Barbera wine has become popular in California for it's deep color and spicy, fruity flavor. Low tannins make it a popular choice, as its an easy wine to drink. Some are aged in oak barrels, making the tannin levels higher, which appeals to another subset of wine drinkers.

12.Zinfandel

Zinfandel is one of the more popular wines and is also one of he best wines as far as flavor goes. It tastes like a blend between white and red wine, with fruity flavors. Most Zinfandels can have a blackberry, cherry, raspberry flavor and scent, but can also have hints of chocolate, coffee, or oak.
