1.Stonehenge
OK so we may not know what actually went on at Stonehenge, but this fantastic ancient monument in England is still seen as being one of the most sacred places in the world. It plays an integral role in traditional Celtic religions and you still have people going there at the solstice in order to get close to mother nature.
2.Bethlehem
This place needs no introduction because of course it is seen as being sacred due to Jesus Christ being born there. It may not be as big or as important in a global sense as Jerusalem, but for Christians that want to get to the absolute roots of their faith this is a city that they need to consider visiting at least once in their lives.
3.Lourdes
This place is seen as being sacred due to the various miracles that it has been claimed have happened here. People have claimed to have been healed of various ailments, so is it no surprise that people will then flock there when there is something wrong with them in order to see if it can indeed improve their situation?
4.Mount Kailash
This mountain in Tibet has to be one of the most sacred natural occurrences anywhere in the world. It plays an important role in not only Buddhism, but also Jainism and Hinduism where it is linked to the God, Shiva. Each year you will tend to find thousands of people flocking there for religious reasons.
5.Varanasi
This is probably the most famous sacred place for the Hindu religion and it is due to the role it has with the sacred River Ganges. People go here to be cremated, to wash in the river, and just to be closer to their faith and at the height of various festivals it is certainly a sight to behold.
6.Tirupati
This city in India holds one of the most important Hindu temples and it gets over 40 million visitors every single year. The temple is dedicated to the God, Lord Venkateswara and as you can see from this photograph it is pretty spectacular to look at and for Hindus it is one of the best places that they can ever visit.
7.Jerusalem
It will be no surprise that Jerusalem is on this list of the most sacred places in the world as it is the focal point for three of the main religions in the world, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The fact that it has been fought over for centuries shows the strength of feeling about the place.

8.Vatican
If you want to see what religion is capable of on a grand scale, then the Vatican is the place that you need to visit. There is just this special feel about the place as you realize that it is the middle of power for the Catholic faith.
9.Tian Tian Buddha
This is one of the biggest Buddhas in the world and even though it was only finished in 1993 it has already become one of the most sacred places for Buddhists around the world. It just seems to encapsulate everything about the religion and it receives thousands of visitors every single year.

10.Mecca
Every Muslim in the world needs to get to Mecca at least once in their lives in order to get closer to Allah. This forms part of their pilgrimage, which forms one of the five pillars of the faith and only Muslims are allowed anywhere near there to keep it sacred.
11.Bodh Gaya
If you are a Buddhist, then this is one of the most sacred places you can ever hope to visit in the world. This temple is in India and it is where Gautama Buddha sat under a tree and managed to achieve enlightenment, so it is no surprise that if you wish to achieve it yourself that you need to go there.

Uluru is one of the most sacred places in the world as well as being one of the most breathtaking natural sights that you will ever come across. It may only be sacred to the Aborigines, but if you ever go there you will just feel this overwhelming spiritual experience that will stay with you forever.
