1.Elizabeth Smith Miller, First Women To Wear Trousers

Elizabeth, born in 1822 was the first woman to wear trousers. The first trousers were in fact more like bloomers, which were elastic at the waist and again at the knee or ankle area. Miller was a firm women's right activist claiming that skirts kept women oppressed and actually stopped them perusing careers and even managing their own transport effectively.




2.Muriel Box, First Woman to Win an Academy Award

Murial was an aspiring actress but found her true talent in being a director and screenwriter. She won an academy award for Best Original Screenplay. The award was for 'The Seventh Veil' and was in collaboration with her then husband.



3.Karla Faye Tucker, First Woman Put To death

Karla joined her boyfriend in a robbery of a friend that was engineered to steal the friends motorbike. After her boyfriend had bludgeoned the friend, Jerry Dean, with a hammer he left the room. There, Tucker then hit him with a pick-axe as she said he was making 'gurgling' noises. Another woman was hiding behind a curtain on the floor and Tucker began hitting her with the pick-axe. She reported later that she experienced intense orgasms with every blow. She was put to death in 1989, by lethal injection. There was much controversy regards her death since she had in later life become very religious.





4.Timmie Jean Lindsey, First Breast Augmentation

Timmie was one of the first females to undergo a breast augmentation. The brave mother of six children underwent the operation in 1962. The operation took place in Houston, Texas. She reported that although she hadn't planned on a breast surgery she was delighted with the results and the change had improved her confidence and life considerably. She was simply a daring volunteer in the procedure and lived to reap the benefits thereafter.



5.Susanna Medora Salter, First Woman Elected Mayor

Susanna was elected mayor in Argonia, Kansas in 1887. Although the election met with very little interest in the town itself it certainly drew worldwide press and attention. After her term as Mayor Susanna led a regular life with her husband and children dying at the age of 101.





6.Lucy Hobbs Taylor, First Female Dentist

Lucy born in New York, USA entered Ohio College of Dental Surgery. She graduated in 1866. She ran a successful practice for many years and is officially the first female dentist on record. She was very active in promoting other women in dentistry and encouraging women to become dentists as a career choice.



7.Marilyn Chambers, First Cross Over From porn Star to Vice-Presidential Candidate

Marilyn started her career as a well known porn star. Her real love was acting and she got into pornographic movies because of a love of theatre and acting. Her first movie 'Behind The Green Door' was so successful it made her an instant porn star. This annoyed her since she realized she would never be taken as a serious actor thereafter. In 2004 she was part of the United States Presidential elections. Running for Vice President. She received over 900 votes. Many felt she had successfully crossed over from porn Star to Presidential Candidate and took her politics seriously. Marilyn died at the age of 57 from heart complications.

8.Elizabeth Blackwell First Female Doctor

Elizabeth born in Bristol, England moved at the age of 8 years old to the USA. The family stricken by poverty found various methods of making money and making ends meet. Elizabeth and her sister started a school for young Ladies interested in learning French. It was merely a means to an end. Later on in life one of Elizabeth's friends became very ill and this inspired her into becoming a doctor. She was not interested in medicine nor did she even enjoy looking at medical books as she found them repulsive! Elizabeth was the only female in her class and graduated in 1849 as the first female Doctor. Her sister Emily was the third woman to get a medical degree.



9.Valentina Tereshkova, First Female To Fly Into Space

Interestingly this Russian Cosmonaut and Engineer left regular school at an early age to study via correspondence courses. She was interested in parachuting from an early age and then started skydiving. Tereshkova joined the female cosmonaut corps. Part of her training included rocket science, spacecraft engineering and pilot training. On June 16, 1963 Tereshkova joined the rest of the Vostok 6 team and launched into space.

10.Augusta Ada King, First Female Computer Programmer

Ada was born in 1815 to famous poet Lord Byron and showed a keen sense of mathematical ability. She often called herself a poetic mathematician. Seeing a similarity in the two sciences. A good friend and keen scholar, her friend Charles Babbage invited Ada to submit some notes she had written for a project he was working on 'The Analytical Engine'. The 'machine' was primarily designed to calculate numbers, but Ada added more ideas and notes to the project. Her notes contained what was then recognised as the first algorithm. She had designed it to fit in with Babbage's machine. Her notes were used in the first steps of computer programming and are still held in strong regard today.



11.Amelia Earhart, First Woman To Fly Solo

Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly solo over the Atlantic Ocean in 1922. She spent a life dedicated to equal rights and women's movements. Earhart had a passion for aviation and tried to inspire others throughout her life. She vanished over the Pacific Ocean in 1937 and to this day people are fascinated by her life and disappearance.

12.Arunima Sinah Climbs Mount Everest

In 2013, May 21st Arunima a female from India climbed Mount Everest. This seems like a tough enough task alone, however, Arunima has a prosthetic leg. Clearly not one to let this get her down, she triumphed over the huge mountain and got the top victorious. Arunima lost her leg while falling from a train. Her leg was crushed by an oncoming train. The reasons as to why she was flung from the train remain unclear.
