Although there are many types of eating disorders, anorexia nervosa, and bulimia nervosa are the two common ones that hit people the most. Note, they are psychological disorders. Eating disorders are not uncommon, and a considerable size of the population suffers from them. Celebrities often suffer from such disturbances. The following 12 stars were troubled in the past by bulimia and anorexia. At a point in time in the past, their condition became so worse that they found it tough to deal with their conditions despite having access to finest healthcare services.
1.Nicole Richie

In the early 2000s, various photos of an emaciated Nicole Richie circulated the web. Rumors of the starlet being anorexic surfaced, but were brushed off by Richie. At one point, the 5'2" fashion designer weighed just 90 pounds. In 2006, Richie decided to seek help and undergo analytical treatment to discover why she had so much trouble putting on any weight." 2.Portia De Rossi

Hottest lesbian celebrity Portia de Rossi is one of the many actresses on Ally McBeal who battled with an eating disorder. Portia was never overweight or unhealthy, but as an actress in Hollywood, she constantly felt the pressure to stay skinny. As a result, de Rossi's weight plummeted to around 82 pounds. She was starving, binging and using laxatives to maintain a svelte appearance. It wasn't until she met and began a relationship with a woman named Francesca that she adapted healthier eating habits and learned to love the skin she was in.

3.Alanis Morissette

Alanis Morissette sings about heartache and love in her songs, but she never touched on her battle with anorexia and bulimia. She says, "As a teen, I was both anorexic and bulimic. I was a young woman in the public eye, on the receiving end of a lot of attention, and I was trying to protect myself from men who were using their power in ways I was too young to know how to handle." 4.Mary-Kate Olsen

One half of the Olsen twins found themselves battling with bulimia in the public eye. Mary-Kate Olsen's emaciated look in the early 2000s had the public and media whispering about her health. She finally admitted that she had an eating disorder and her father Dave, and her therapist committed her to a treatment facility not too long after her high school graduation. 5.Geri "Ginger Spice" Halliwell

Geri Halliwell is the member of popular 90s girls music group "Spice Girls." She goes by the name "Ginger Spice," and it was actually a big name in the recording industry in the mid-90s. She joined the group in 1994 and left it in 1998 following her depression and irreconcilable differences between the group members. Shortly after the exit, her depression became unmanageable, and she started binge eating. She was "purging" so badly that she came close to death due to malnutrition and extremely low body weight. Her family members said to have helped her to bring her back to sound health. Geri Halliwell is healthy now. She reunited with "Spice Girls" in 2007.

When Elton John first hit the music scene, he was a rather skinny man; now that he's a little older John is more on the stocky side. In his younger years, John battled with bulimia, as well as an eating disorder which consisted of chewing and spitting. 7.Dennis Quaid

his battle, Dennis Quaid coined the phrase 'manorexia.' The actor said his body issues began when he lost 40 pounds to play Doc Holliday in the 1994 movie "Wyatt Earp." Quaid went on to receive treatment for the disorder and has not looked as skeletal as Doc Holliday ever since.

8.Billy Bob Thornton

Women aren't the only ones who battle with body issues. Actor Billy Bob Thornton spoke candidly about his battle with anorexia. The actor raised a few eyebrows when he appeared in the 1998 film, Armageddon looking very frail and gaunt. 9.Ashlee Simpson

The singer, songwriter and the sister of Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson, was troubled by an eating disorder as well. A few years ago, Ashlee Simpson revealed that she battled with anorexia for a short period when she was just 11 years old. The singer was practicing ballet and felt compelled to stay fit to perform. She stopped eating, and that had led to a sharp decline in her body weight. She has constantly been criticized for her small appearances over the years, but Ashlee insists she has overcome those body issues.

10.Sharon Osbourne

Sharon Osbourne is a stunning 63-year-old woman. The talk show host battled with weight issues for most of her life. Osbourne said she had fought bulimia-related issues for 35 years. She would binge-eat at family dinners and then make herself sick afterward. She said she had gained a lot of weight in the past because of bulimia.  She eventually had gastric bypass surgery, but that still didn't cure her physical issues. As you may know, bulimia refers to binge eating of food and purging it out with laxatives. People like Osbourne who suffer from bulimia don't particularly love food, but they eat it anyway because their mind constantly wants them to eat something. 11.Christina Ricci

Christina Ricci spent most of her life in the eye of public, but she battled with the eating disorder anorexia nervosa in private. The actress even blames television for her disorder. During a 2004 interview with the UK newspaper, The Guardian, she said, "At the time that I was starting to diet and stuff, I saw this TV movie, and I thought, 'Ooh - anorexia. I could probably do that.' " She said she had undergone such a bad case of anorexia that it almost killed her. She looks fine and healthy now.  She married James Heerdegen in 2013, and the couple welcomed a son a year later.

12.Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi

Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi Aka Nicole P. has been showing off her svelte new figure all over town. The reality star has her weight under control, but that wasn't always the case. During a recent episode of Dancing with the Stars, Snooki revealed that she suffered from Anorexia in high school. She revealed, "Cheerleading was my life in high school but it wasn't always easy for me. I started to be anorexic. There were these little girls coming up, like freshmen, who were literally, like, 70 pounds." Did you know Snooki is bisexual?
